As Miguel, I think that this is quite a pathological bug. It is true that it is probably quite surprising when it occurs. Fortunately, it should be rather hard to create file names which start with http:// or ftp://. Fortunately, the error message is sufficiently wise to point to the offending name, and with the error recovery mechanism, brutal exits should be avoided. I finally added the additional safeguard to avoid directories which start with http:// or ftp:// when doing read_directory.

So, we try to fix this checking for the OS and disallowing slashes / backslashes depending on the system? Or it's not worth the effort? I vote against.

I have the message Fatal error, invalid base url.
In fact the file name must begin with http:\\. It is impossible to set a '/' in a unix filename as it is the path separator, but a '\' we can.

Because I don't like to have my documents in .TeXmacs, I linked some folders of /home to ./TeXmacs/texts

When I do a search via help-menu texmacs crashes with this message:
base= http://www.netzliteratur.de

Fatal error: wildcards only implemented for files in 'complete'
See file : url.cpp

I could track down the error to a folder in the search path called "www.netzliteratur.de". When I renamed it to something else it works.

Seems that there may not be folders with webpage-names inside the My Folder Search.
