For me, it is okay to close the report. If there are still issues on other platform it can be re-opened.

@Torsten: Okay to close report now?

Changeset http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/9326c2258e60 fixes the issue for me. The find dialog lost its property of staing on top of the editor widget when the latter was docked/undocked.

@mtmiller: both docked and undocked, dialog can be buried and isn't brought to front with cmd+f

I see the same as Rik with GNOME. However, if I undock the editor panel from the main Octave window, the editor can be moved on top of the find dialog. The find dialog stays on top of the main Octave window always, so as long as the editor is docked, it is always visible and on top.

@eflister is the editor docked to Octave or undocked when you see this, or same in both cases?

That's what I needed to know.  I re-titled the report to be more specific about what the problem is.

This behavior is likely an interaction between the window manager, window manager settings, and Qt.  As mentioned, on Linux with KDE as the window manager, I am unable to even put the Find window behind the main Octave GUI window.

@Torsten: Is the behavior the same for you on GNOME as it is with KDE for me?

@rik5: are you on mac os as the issue specifies?  we're talking about the same dialog but on osx it gets buried behind windows, as described.

Which Find dialog does this report refer to?  When I am in the Editor window, using Ctrl+F brings up a Find window.  This window stays on top of other Octave windows at all times until closed.  There is a Find command in the documentation tab, but it seems to be a dialog within the tab and not a separate window.

ah thanks for the pointer to 41471, consider this just about foregrounding the dialog.  cmd-f brings it up if it does not already exist, but if it does exist behind another window it stays hidden there.

also its location is not remembered after quitting and relaunching.

Search in the command window is not yet implemented. It is already requested in bug #41471.

Do you have configured a different shortcut for the find dialogs?

find/replace dialog doesn't come to foreground when you hit cmd-f.

cmd-f doesn't work in command window for searching output.
