What is 'edit mode' set to? If you want to run a terminal-based editor like nano, you want to make sure you set 'edit mode sync' so it isn't run in the background.

The default mode is 'async' to allow graphical editors to be started and not block the Octave interpreter.

This works for me

>> edit mode sync
>> EDITOR nano
>> edit foo.txt

The nano editor launches from terminal version of octave. does not launch at all from gui version (installed by brew)

however once launched, any key press is basically gibberish. seems like terminal settings / parity etc errors that do not match.
