Corresponding source code
LVM pvcreate and vgconvert offers --bootloaderareasize for : "Create a separate bootloader area of specified size besides PV's data area. .../... This is primarily aimed for use with bootloaders to embed their own data or metadata."
That area would be clean target and allow simple configuration for LVM, RAID+LVM, etc. without partitioning complexity prerequisite.
