The offending commit is 98ffb642, made shortly after 2.4.2.  It was meant to defend against unwanted behavior when specifying a directory on the command line, but the barrier was too broad.

The manual says that --noread can be used to write to named pipes.  But when one tries to do that, it fails:

    mkfifo thepipe
    nano --noread thepipe

Result: [ "thepipe" is not a normal file ], and instead of using it anyway a New Buffer is opened.

Bug exists since at least 2.4.3 -- 2.3.6 is still okay.
