I started a clean build this morning starting with a new MXE cloned repository and newly cloned octave repo, and the resulting installer worked fine.

It's possible that you need to clean out your MXE build directory as well. I'm building a MXE version of Octave for Windows right now and will know in an hour or so whether this is required.

I have been uninstalling previous development versions completely before installing the new one. I did so again and made sure C:\Octave\Octave-4.3.0+ doesn't exist. This time I moved the Octave-4.2.1 directory out as well and the dev version installed the same with the same problems. If I manually delete C:\Octave\OCTAVE~1.0_\share\octave\4.3.0+\m\plot\util\ishghandle.m, the next restart doesn't have the warning, and it works fine. After getting it to work, uninstalling and re-installing brings back the same error. I'm in the process of building it again, maybe it will work better.

The problem is that ishghandle.m has been removed from the development version, but is still present from a previous installation of Octave.

Completely uninstall Octave, and remove the directory

Re-install your development version of Octave and it should be fine.

The clue is the shadowed function warning. Make sure you don't see that.

On linux, I thought early yesterday or late two days prior I had launched Octave and saw a message about "warning: ishghandle [from some particular script file] shadows an internal function". But then that warning didn't come back and I just forgot about it. I pulled the latest code last night and see no graphics problems. Again, that's on Linux.

I finally built a dev version with the features from recent bug fixes I wanted, but this time, there are also some serious errors introduced probably related to some recent commits. I find that calls to plot and figure fail (and maybe others). Calling figure, or plot(rand(10)) both fail and result in flooding the command prompt with the following:

I can't actually see what the errors are because I can't scroll up due to bug #52496, but It is clear there is an infinite loop as ishghandle and ishandle call each other. I'll also note that when first opening matlab I get the following warning:
