The user should always be in full control. If they want to manually select where ticks are placed and what the label is they should always be able to do that, but they also take responsibility for any overlaps.

I changed the commit message slightly. The GNU convention is to mention the name of the function that was altered in addition to the file. For m-files this isn't done, unless there is more than one function in the m-file. But for C++ files it is almost always necessary.

The attached patch only re-calculates the tick labels if the mode is "auto".

Should manually set tick labels always be displayed even if they interfere with axes placement? Like in:

This fails using gnuplot or OpenGL backends, so it is a problem within graphics.cc and not with a particular renderer.
