You posted another comment while I was writing, so my last comment might be confusing. “On the contrary” refers to the question “Is it absolutely settled the the disc is written from center to outside?”

On the contrary: there is general agreement that the disc was written from outside to center, i.e. from right to left.

The photo you linked to has lower resolution than Wikipedia’s photo (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/%CE%94%CE%AF%CF%83%CE%BA%CE%BF%CF%82_%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82_%CE%A6%CE%B1%CE%B9%CF%83%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%8D_%CF%80%CE%BB%CE%B5%CF%85%CF%81%CE%AC_%CE%91_6380.JPG), wherein can more clearly be seen the two points around the grip, which is why all my proposals have had two protrusions in the middle.

David,

Your bow is more compressed than the original, but there aren't many alternatives given the pixel constraint so I'll use it. I actually did something similar (but mirrored) at first and went for extending the bow to make it look less curved.

Thanks,

Paul Hardy

David,

What I intended to draw was a recurve bow like a Scythian bow, but with a thick area for the grip. It's hard to get anything looking perfect with this resolution.

I would rather not have other glyphs be taller. I just did it with the bow to have enough pixels to render the curves.

Is it absolutely settled the the disc is written from center to outside? I have seen various proposed translations, at least one of which believes the writing to be from outside to center. I think that would only be plausible if someone had arranged all the stamps in a circle ahead of time before impressing them into the clay.

Thanks,

Paul Hardy

The disc depicts a recurve bow, whereas the glyph in your last comment is a straight bow.

The code chart glyphs are intentionally mirrored: the Phaistos Disc was written from right to left, but modern scholars transcribe it from left to right. Since the signs’ bidi class is strong left-to-right, a font should render them mirrored too.

There are other glyphs that could be made single-width, but if you do change them, be sure that all the signs that take U+101FD PHAISTOS DISC SIGN COMBINING OBLIQUE STROKE remain double-width.

If you’re open to glyphs more than 12 pixels tall, the shaft of U+101D9 PHAISTOS DISC SIGN ARROW could be longer.

David,

I looked for the bow on the Phaistos disc, and it appears only once. I have attached an image. The clay tablet glyph looks like a real bow. What is in the Unicode Standard font does not. This is what I propose (no bowstring, to try to keep it uncluttered):

0101DA:00000810102020303030202010100800

I realize that the other glyphs are double-width, but this really is a skinny glyph (and tall).

Also, either the Unicode code charts have horizontally flipped glyphs or these images are reversed:

For example, look at our versions of U+101D7 PHAISTOS DISC SIGN GAUNTLET and what is on the disc.

That U+101DA still does not look like the bow on the disc. How about this?

David,

I have modified these glyphs and incorporated the others:

Some of Unifont’s Phaistos Disc glyphs don’t look like they do on the disc itself.

U+101D2 PHAISTOS DISC SIGN TATTOOED HEAD: the vertical line in the middle of the head looks like a cheekbone or an ear, so it should not reach to the top of the head.

U+101D7 PHAISTOS DISC SIGN GAUNTLET: the diagonal stripe should come from the leftmost finger, not from the second finger from the left.

U+101D8 PHAISTOS DISC SIGN TIARA is squished and some of the lines are misplaced.

U+101D9 PHAISTOS DISC SIGN ARROW: the shaft should go all the way through the feathers.

U+101DA PHAISTOS DISC SIGN BOW does not look like the symbol on the disc.

U+101DC PHAISTOS DISC SIGN CLUB: the bumps should not extend the length of the club: there should be a handle.

U+101DE PHAISTOS DISC SIGN MATTOCK: the points of the blade are not pointy enough.

U+101E8 PHAISTOS DISC SIGN SHIP: the little details are different.

U+101EA PHAISTOS DISC SIGN HIDE: the head and arms should have square ends and the tail should not be filled in black.

U+101ED PHAISTOS DISC SIGN RAM: the horn is too big and the neck is too stocky.

U+101EE PHAISTOS DISC SIGN EAGLE shouldn’t have a collar and should be carrying something.

U+101F1 PHAISTOS DISC SIGN BEE: the wings should reach as far down as the body.

U+101F6 PHAISTOS DISC SIGN LILY should be symmetrical and its lines should be thinner. It currently looks like a cactus.

U+101FD PHAISTOS DISC SIGN COMBINING OBLIQUE STROKE combines below or below left, not below right.
