I looked at U+0F3E and U+0F7F and saw that they are actually combining characters, not spacing glyphs.  So I am leaving them as combining characters.

Because Tibetan only has those two glyphs as combining characters on the left and right sides of glyphs, and because they are only used with numeric digits, I allowed Tibetan glyphs to be single-width in many cases in the Unifont 10.0.07 release.

Anything more, such as making all astrological symbols double-width, I would like to coordinate with Rich Felker. So I do not plan to make any further changes to Tibetan for now.

David,

I will change U+0F3E and U+0F7F. Hopefully Rich Felker will give his input on the other changes--at least, I want to give him that opportunity. I will not mark this "In Progress" yet because apart from those two glyphs it is in a holding pattern for now.

Thanks,

Paul Hardy

Okay. I think the problems with U+0F3E and U+0F7F, being related to mark positioning and not glyph shape, should be uncontroversial enough to fix without waiting.

David,

I have emailed Richard Felker, inviting him to participate in discussing changes to his Tibetan glyphs. I have not received a reply so I would like to put these changes on hold for now to give him a chance to look this over and respond.

David,

Richard Felker drew the original Tibetan glyphs for Unifont. I would want to involve him in discussion on modifications of this magnitude. I will probably postpone this in the interests of getting out the next release in a short enough time, and contact him after that.

This bug report has five parts. Some of these problems are not very problematic but I think it is better to err on the side of lots of suggestions.

Part 1

U+0F04 TIBETAN MARK INITIAL YIG MGO MDUN MA and U+0F05 TIBETAN MARK CLOSING YIG MGO SGAB MA are meant to connect to each other like ⟨༄༅༅⟩. The same goes for U+0FD3 TIBETAN MARK INITIAL BRDA RNYING YIG MGO MDUN MA and U+0FD4 TIBETAN MARK CLOSING BRDA RNYING YIG MGO SGAB MA. U+0F06 and U+0F07 are not wrong, but I have suggested new glyphs for them to match the suggested glyphs for the others.

U+0F19 TIBETAN ASTROLOGICAL SIGN SDONG TSHUGS should be a bit lower to avoid bumping into digits.

The astrological symbols U+0F1B through U+0F1F are squished compared to the other astrological symbols U+0F1A, U+0FCE, and U+0FCF.

U+0F3E TIBETAN SIGN YAR TSHES should be shifted right to avoid bumping into digits.

The loop of U+0F58 TIBETAN LETTER MA doesn’t look as it ought.

U+0F6A TIBETAN LETTER FIXED-FORM RA should look exactly like U+0F62 TIBETAN LETTER RA.

U+0F6B TIBETAN LETTER KKA and U+0F6C TIBETAN LETTER RRA should look like U+0F40 TIBETAN LETTER KA and U+0F62 TIBETAN LETTER RA reversed.

The long vowels U+0F71, U+0F73, U+0F75, U+0F77, and U+0F79 are inconsistent in how they render the ’a-chung. My suggested glyphs make them look more like U+0F60.

The syllabic liquids U+0F76 through U+0F79 don’t look like the sequences to which they are canonically/compatibly equivalent to.

U+0F7F TIBETAN SIGN RNAM BCAD should be shifted right to avoid bumping into consonants.

U+0F88 TIBETAN SIGN LCE TSA CAN, U+0F89 TIBETAN SIGN MCHU CAN, and U+0F8C TIBETAN SIGN INVERTED MCHU CAN should be lower to avoid bumping into diacritics above.

U+0F89 TIBETAN SIGN MCHU CAN, U+0F8C TIBETAN SIGN INVERTED MCHU CAN, U+0F8E TIBETAN SUBJOINED SIGN MCHU CAN, and U+0F8F TIBETAN SUBJOINED SIGN INVERTED MCHU CAN needn’t be so small.

U+0FCF TIBETAN SIGN RDEL NAG GSUM is asymmetrical.

U+0FD2 TIBETAN MARK NYIS TSHEG should look like two stacked U+0F0B TIBETAN MARK INTERSYLLABIC TSHEGs.

Part 3

Some of the base consonants overlap subjoined consonants, and some of those can be shortened without completely messing up the glyph.

0F44:0000000000001E00200040007C00020000000000000000000000000000000000

Part 4

One of those shortened base consonant suggestions differs from the current glyph sufficiently that its subjoined form should change to match it.

0F94:000000000000000000000000000000001E00200040007C000200000000000000

Part 5

All the Tibetan glyphs (all but two with my suggestions) are two cells wide. This is unnecessary and makes Tibetan text look like it has wide letter-spacing: most of the glyphs’ ink is completely within the left half or the right half. All the letters and digits and many symbols can have their blank right halves removed. U+0F3E and U+0F7F can have their blank halves removed and be made into spacing glyphs.
