I believe that this is fixed in Unifont 10.0.04, just uploaded. However, before closing this bug report I am going to ask the FontForge community to evaluate the TrueType version of Unifont. If they determine that the font is properly formed with respect to double diacritics, I will consider display anomalies in applications to be bugs in those applications. In that case, I will then close this bug and pursue trying to get maintainers of those applications to address those display problems.

I have experimented with this and have been able to add offsets of one position to the left for double diacritics. The glyph positioning looks correct in FontForge.

Unfortunately, most applications I tried did not handle them correctly. Emacs and vi did not. LibreOffice seems to be trying to adjust the vertical placement of the double circumflex accent depending on the height of the letters it is above. If it is doing that, it could be overriding the glyph metrics I assigned for the double diacritics. The GNOME terminal program that I use on Debian GNU/Linux doesn't place the accents correctly. The only thing I have tried that does work is the Terminal program on a Mac, under Mac OS X El Capitan.

I had not planned to do this, but I am going to release Unifont 10.0.04 soon so there will be a released font that maintainers of other programs can try.

The release will take care of as many open issues on Savannah as possible.

Stay tuned!

There are two ways I could deal with this: the easy way and the hard way.

The easy way is to hard-code exceptions in hex2sfd.

I would much rather handle this the hard way, which would be to add an x-axis offset value for each code point in the *combining.txt file for each Unicode plane, and have hex2sfd use that value. That way the hex2sfd code will not need individual exceptions.

I have a lot going on for the rest of this week through Sunday afternoon, and will be out of town the last week in July. I might not be too responsive over that time but I'll be working on this. I will try to add the x-offset values to the combining files with hex2sfd support for the next Unifont release. If I don't have time to implement and test that change, I will handle it the easy way by adding exceptions in hex2sfd, at least in the beginning.

I will try to get things in order for a next Unifont release sometime in the beginning of August, after I return from being out of town.

Double diacritics to apply a base character and the next character, but in Unifont they seem to apply to the base character and the previous character. For example, in ⟨ab͜c⟩ the breve appears to be between ⟨a⟩ and ⟨b⟩, whereas it should be between ⟨b⟩ and ⟨c⟩. The double diacritics are [[:ccc=233:][:ccc=234:]], i.e. U+035C, U+035D, U+035E, U+035F, U+0360, U+0361, U+0362, U+1DCD, and U+1DFC.
