I believe this is fixed in the Unifont 10.0.04 release, just uploaded. I think the Byzantine glyphs need additional work even at the Unicode Consortium level. For example, the "ano" and "kato" variants ought to be combining characters. But that is a task for another day.

David,

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. The glyphs were drawn to resemble the glyphs in the official Unicode code charts, but I have been aware that there were problems with them. I intend to get together with someone who is an expert in Byzantine notation and go over them in person when he and I both have time.

The real challenge with these glyphs is that their placement is bound to be unsatisfactory without sophisticated TrueType positioning. There is an excellent set of free fonts available for Byzantine notation at http://www.stanthonysmonastery.org/music/ByzMusicFonts.html. The bottom of that web page shows a sample of how the symbols are combined in complex ways as notation for Byzantine chant. The fonts at that link are not Unicode fonts but they are the best that I have found.

The characters in the Byzantine Musical Symbols block are named in Greek: ANO, MESO, and KATO mean high, middle, and low. Characters whose names differ only in ANO/MESO/KATO have the same shape at different heights. In Unifont Upper, they are often placed at the wrong heights, and characters in the same set often have different shapes. The sets are U+1D04E, U+1D0F0, U+1D0F2; U+1D04F, U+1D0F1, U+1D0F3; U+1D07F, U+1D0F4; and U+1D08F, U+1D0F5.
