Once again, I find that the font developer gains a great deal of flexibility by avoiding explicit glyph formation of conjuncts. It should be done only when the glyphs change significantly in form in the ligature.

Re-worked FreeSans so it can support classical and modern style, as well as the variant style of ra in conjuncts described in the Standard. See attachments.

I reviewed the situation, and found that I had left FreeSerif's Tamil in an unusable state several years ago. Brain slip.

Today's commits should resolve some of this problem, in serif regular and bold, and in sans regular.

For comparison with the standard, the distinction should be "traditional" and "modern", rather than "classical" and "reformed".

bug #39998: Tamil: Request to add Classical Tamil ligatures

In FreeSerif, when reformed Tamil is enabled, the vowel signs u and uu are substituted with the independent vowel letters u and uu. For example, ⟨கு⟩ ku looks identical to ⟨கஉ⟩ ka’u. This seems suspicious: I can’t find any reference to a reform of Tamil with this substitution.
