I suppose this would apply to GRUB 2 when the specification itself is moved.  Please can someone check?

Are there any legal obstacles with moving texinfo docs from grub to grub2 ?

Another thing for which it is difficult to find documentation (other than by looking at Grub source) is precisely which optional features of Multiboot are supported by Grub.

Two specific problems in the specification:

1. The description and diagram of the mmap structures could hardly be more confusing. Instead of describing it as “size/structure pairs?, I would just say that mmap_addr points to the first structure. Start the offsets in the diagram at zero not -4. To get to the next structure, add the contents of the size field, plus 4. (This is what the code in kernel.c does.)

2. The mmap structures indicate the regions of “available RAM.? It should be clarified that regions containing the loaded kernel, modules, etc. are nevertheless considered “available?.

Can the sample code for a multiboot kernel be fixed too?  There are at least two changes necessary to kernel.c, the second of which caused me much annoyance when trying to build a multiboot-compliant loader:

diff  old/kernel.c new/kernel.c
18c18
< #include <multiboot.h>
---

> #include "multiboot.h"

96c96
<          i++, mod += sizeof (module_t))
---

>          i++, mod++)

The Multiboot Specification 0.7 is far from complete.
Here is a list of what must be done:

  • Rewrite some parts using more strict words for clarity.
  • Rewrite some parts using tables for clarity.
  • Revive the history.
  • Reconsider the BIOS drive mapping support.
  • Reconsider the VBE support.
  • Ask people to proofread it. Perhaps it would be better

  to send a draft to those who work on GNU/Hurd, L4,
  AtheOS, OSKit or some others.
