Yes this would be a good thing to do. Right now I'm trying to stick to bugfix mode.

This is a feature request.

All the FreeFonts use the 'zero' feature to select a slashed glyph for U+0030 DIGIT ZERO. Unicode 9.0 standardized a variation sequence for this: U+0030 U+FE00. This sequence should be supported in the FreeFonts too.

FYI, Unicode 9.0 also added the variation sequence U+2205 U+FE00: a zero with a long diagonal stroke overlay. See http://www.unicode.org/L2/L2015/15268-slashed-zero.pdf for background information.
