I checked in a clarification of the language in the manual here (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/b19287c4e74a)

There seems to be an error on the manual page
https://www.gnu.org/software/octave/doc/interpreter/Multiple-Plots-on-One-Page.html

An example is given near the top of that page, including the following sentence:
"The grid of plot areas created by subplot is numbered in column-major order (top to bottom, left to right)."

This seems to contradict the information given lower on the page (and the actual behavior of the subplot function).

Perhaps the sentence should be deleted altogether. The example involves a 2x1 grid of plotting areas, so it's impossible to distinguish between column-major and row-major ordering anyway. And a clear explanation of the sequence of plotting areas is given later.

BTW, the explanation of the example seems to end prematurely. It explains what the first call to subplot does but it doesn't mention the second call to subplot.

Best regards,
Steve
