I have verified that building from the 1.05.002 snapshot creates a working gnubg.

As far as the OS binary package is concerned, upgrading to Elementary loki release should fix the issue as well since it is based on ubuntu 16.04 and includes a version of gnubg recent enough to have the bug already fixed.

Without further feedback, I'll close this bug report after two weeks.

Regarding building from a sources snapshot, you should not use an old one like SNAPSHOT-20130913. You should use http://files.gnubg.org/media/sources/gnubg-release-1.05.002-sources.tar.gz which is the most recent one.

The last few lines of output from the build don't contain anything useful. The interesting error messages are earlier. If you get the same failure with the more recent snapshot the last 20 or so lines would probably contain an indication about what went wrong with gnubg.o, but a full log, including the "./configure" stage, would be safer. You can attach it to the bug report as a file instead of pasting it in a comment.

The crash of the gnubg installed from Ubuntu repo is due to this bug :

2014-07-25 Michael Petch <mpetch@gnubg.org>
* mtsupport.c, multithread.c, multithread.h: Fix problem with mutexes being incorrectly initialized/freed/locked/unlocked on environemnts with GLIB >= 2.32. This bug was identified with recent GLIB builds with extra runtime checks. See crash reported by Chris Fahlman using unstable Ubuntu. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnubg/+bug/1346567

It was fixed only after 1.02 was released. You would have to file a bug report at elementary (or possibly ubuntu) to have it fixed there.

Note that elementary has a different glib (2.42) from ubuntu 14.04 (2.40) so it is possible the issue is harmless on the latter (if the extra runtime checks mentioned above are not enabled by default at 2.40 but are at 2.42) and ubuntu may not be eager to do something about it.

Hello,

I'm using elementary OS 0.3.2 Freya (64-bit Built on Ubuntu 14.04).
I've installed GNU Backgammon through repositories.

When I open it, the program starts (it make a welcome sound and I can see the interface, the menu and so on) but after 10 seconds it crashes.
In 10 seconds I can start a game, but as soon as the AI have to play it crashes.

I've also tried to follow the following instructions
http://www.gnubg.org/index.php?itemid=100
but when I give the 'make' command it gives me these errors

compilation terminated.
make[2]: *** [gnubg.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/giancarlo/Downloads/gnubg-source-SNAPSHOT-20130913'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/giancarlo/Downloads/gnubg-source-SNAPSHOT-20130913'
make: *** [all] Error 2

and when I give the 'sudo make install' command it gives me these errors

compilation terminated.
make[2]: *** [gnubg.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/giancarlo/Downloads/gnubg-source-SNAPSHOT-20130913'
make[1]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/giancarlo/Downloads/gnubg-source-SNAPSHOT-20130913'
make: *** [install] Error 2

and again it doesn't work.

Any suggestion??
