Seems like reporter doesn't want to debug this any further, closing as invalid.

I run octave.vbs from the zip file; this has the successful plot execution.

I tried deleting the qt.conf file and it still didn't work. However, I tried using the same win64 installer in a different machine -- the plot worked there. Perhaps the machine having an issue has policies that cause this issue -- for the meantime I'll just use Octave on the other machine so that I can continue.

Thanks for all the help!

ok

There 'should' be no difference between the installer vs the zipfile

The installer just copies the files to a directory, and creates shortcuts, registry settings for installed files.

How did you run octave when using the zip file ?

The installer does create a qt.conf file in the octave\bin directory, which the zip file dooes not have - you could also try removing it and seeing if it makes any difference.

I used the 64-bit installers.

Originally, did you use the 64 bit or 32bit installer?

Thanks for the suggestion John. Tried it but still didn't work, the plot still freezes for a long time and never finished. It's possible this is a different issue from the font cache.

I tried using the Win64 zip file just now and it worked. Perhaps this is an issue specific to the 4.2.0 .exe installer?

The font cache fix was after 4.2.0 was created, so will hopefully be in 4.2.1

The fix was to build the font cache during the install of octave, so that it didnt appear to 'lock up' during the first time a plot was created.

o verify if your problem is caused by that, you can open a bash window from the Octace start menu and run fc-cache. AFter it has completed, open octave and see if it still freezes or not.

I'm confused with the fix on bug #45458 -- is it the fix to show that the font cache is building so that user will understand why it's taking so long to output a figure, or is it the fix to the original problem description where the screen didn't respond at all anymore which is similar to this bug?

I'm not sure if the 4.2.0 Windows installer has the final fix for bug #45458 that was pushed only on Dec 1, 2016

The plot window will just freeze without any result upon executing any variant of the plot command. I initially thought it's a duplicate of bug #45458, but I've left it running for 6 hours now and it still didn't load.

Octave version: 4.2.0
OS: Win 10 64-bit
