Tasos is correct that the author list needs to be changed so that individual author names are separated with "and" instead of commas. I'll fix that.

I think there's some confusion here.

BibTeX styles can format the names in whatever way is needed ("last, first" or "initial last" or whatever). So the database isn't supposed to need to have names listed with "last, first" or "first last", at least for most common names. Some names do need to be entered "last, first" but we don't have like that for the Octave manual. This is clearly documented in the LaTeX book. If a particular style gets it wrong, then the style is buggy.

The style we use for citations in the Octave manual itself (where we don't use BibTeX) can be whatever we choose, but it should be consistent. I think the style shown in the example in comment #3 is fine.

I'll re-open the report and let someone who does more publishing of academic papers decide how to handle things. The question is whether there should be an inconsistency between the recommended style in plain text which uses "FirstName SecondName" and a built-in preference in BibTex for "SecondName, FirstName".

Obvious ways to resolve this

1) Just make different recommendations based on plain text vs. BibTex

2) Change plain text and BibTex to use "SecondName, FirstName" syntax

3) Change BibTex to use "FirstName SecondName" despite it being a less popular option

Note that the format used throughout the rest of Octave's manual is "FirstName SecondName".

Try

to see instances. One example is

I would suggest that it is probably not worth flipping all citations in Octave and this would lead to adopting solution #1 or #3.

Hi Rik, the accent wasn't the only error, although that is indeed the only one that will cause a latex compilation error, whereas the rest will simply fail silently.

The names are also the wrong format.
The delimited needs to be the word "and"; commas are interpreted as secondary names of the same author instead.

Furthermore, although the format "FirstName(s) SecondName" should be accepted, in practice it causes problems, and the format "SecondName, FirstName(s)" (note the comma) should be preferred.
On my thesis the first format resulted in the wrong output.

I would recommend the corrected string to be as I put it below :)

Thanks for catching that. I fixed it on the stable branch here (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/1c662986189a).

The citation function produces bad latex output for the author field, causing problems in latex.

Correct output should be:
