(The reporter answered by email instead of posting a comment. My guess that he wanted -S/--smooth was correct.)

Hello Peter,

Please run 'nano -smxv' again, type two letters, and then hit ^T (Ctrl+T). From the error message you can probably figure out the answer to your question.

When you use '-sm', you tell nano that the spell checking program that you wish to use is called "m". When you use '-smxv', you tell nano the spell checker is called "mxv".

You probably intend to use the option -S, not -s.

nano -sm -vx
nano -sm -v
nano -sm -x
all work (-v and -x take effect)
however
nano -smxv
does not work.

Why? This is probably a bug
