I've just committed a fix to a related issue. The problem was that EODetailDatasSource masterClassDescription should only refer to the EOClassDescription class if the master class description name is actually set. Otherwise it should consult the master datasource directly. Anyway, as you suggested, it's time to close this report.

I guess it is correct as you describe it, because setting the master data source does not yet determine the class of the master object? E.g., if it is not a EODatabaseDataSource or some other data source where all fetched objects are of the same class. Those master objects of different classes need only to provide a value for the detail key. In this case, the master class is only determined when the master object is set by qualifyWithRelationshipKey:ofObject:. I think the bug report can be closed as invalid.

My tests show that it would be wrong to initialize _masterKeyDescriptionName in initWithMasterDataSource:detailKey:. If you are seeing exceptions during instertObject: I suppose you my have forgotten to call qualifyWithRelationshipKey:ofObject: before. I get these exception in EOF also if I omit that call.

Creating an EODetailDataSource from a master data source using dataSourceQualifiedByKey:, its _masterClassDescriptionName is not set. This results in an assertion failure when trying to fetch later.

It seems to me that the bug lies in -[EODetailDataSource initWithMasterDataSource: detailKey:]. There, self is initialized with a nil masterClassDescription. Instead of nil, [master classDescriptionForObjects] should be used.
(Line 86 of EODetailDataSource).
