Maybe the default should be the Source tab, since we primarily care about a source distribution. Then anyone who wants a binary build for their system needs to click a specific tab, no preference.

But I still am okay with autodetecting the browser's operating system, because it's not an exclusive choice, it doesn't make it hard to find the others, they are still very easy to see in the tab selection. I would agree with jwe if it were a page that just said "you are running GNU/Linux, download this" with no option to see what else is available.

I'm not sure we should do this. Octave is about promoting free software, so it seems fine to me to default to a free OS.

Also, FWIW, I find it annoying when download sites assume they know what I'm looking for based on the type of OS I'm using. Maybe I'm browsing using one OS but looking for software for another?

This was originally brought up in the mailing list: http://octave.1599824.n4.nabble.com/Website-autodetect-OS-td4680922.html

Quoting the original message:

> [On the website] there is a tabbed interface for the download links, with each tab corresponding to a particular OS.
>
> However (for me at least) the default active tab is always GNU/Linux. It should be easy to add some JS to set the default active tab to the user's OS. See, e.g., http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7044944/jquery-javascript-to-detect-os-without-a-plugin. Figured this might help more users download Octave.
