Ok, I was mis-remembering. You're right, I think I saw that the default was 2. I deleted the qt-settings file and the tab spacing was 2 as expected.

What originally started my griping about this was the fact that the first time I used Octave, when I pressed the tab button it only moved by one space. I swear that even after changing the tab spacing option and re-starting, I wasn't getting anything more than one space. When I selected multiple lines and tabbed I got 2 spaces no matter what.

But today everything seems to be working so I'm thoroughly confused.

The tab width should default to 2. Can you try deleting the file ~/.config/octave/qt-settings (where ~ is your user profile, C:\Users\name I think) while Octave is not running and start Octave again and check what the tab width is set to?

After installing Octave 4.2.0-w64, I noticed that pressing tab only moved the cursor by 1 space.

In Octave GUI I went to edit->Preferences. In the General tab, the Tab Width was defaulted to 1. I expected this to be 4 like Matlab. It should definitely be > 1.
