Just to point out that I've got more insights on when this was happening: If I start a freshly compiled Octave with the GUI, _have_gnuplot_ behaves correctly, then I recompile in the background incorporating the new changes from dev and _have_gnuplot_ becomes a nohop. Nothing to worry I presume but I am reassured I was not dreaming.

Complete mystery to me but I reran a freshly compiled Octave and this time _have_gnuplot_ returned something, as desired:

Beforehand, I was observing this:

No idea what the problem was but you can close this report for now. Sorry for the noise.

Looking at the _have_gnuplot_ and have_gnuplot_binary functions in libinterp/dldfcn/__init_gnuplot__.cc, I don't see how it can ever return nothing. If that's possible, I need more info to understand how it can happen.

It might not be an issue at all but I noticed that in file .build/libinterp/dldfcn/PKG_ADD there is a line:

which returns an error as _have_gnuplot_ returns nothing.
