Holding Shift to mark/select text will work only together with the dedicated movement keys, not with the alphanumeric nor punctuation ones.

To reproduce, run 'src/nano +18,29 NEWS' and then press <Shift+Alt+=> a few times. One would expect the text from "vent" to the new cursor position to become highlighted and thus selected.

Of course this is somewhat problematic: the idea was to have the mnemonic key combos Alt++ and Alt+- scroll up and down, but for the first Shift needs to be held (on most keyboards), so to avoid having to do that, also M-= works as Scroll-Up. And for symmetry also M-_ works as Scroll-Down. But... since Shift+Arrow and Shift+Home/End and Shift+PgUp/PgDn select text, one might begin to expect that Shift plus any cursor movement selects text. However, that will not work: Shift+Ctrl+Y and Shift+Ctrl+V will not select a whole screenful of text. (On my terminal emulator, the latter key combo is caught and pastes whatever is on X's clipboard.)

So... not sure what is wise.
