I would vote for closing #37971 and reopening this bug.

Hm,... I do not understand clear java that way.
I read part of the book and I saw that clear java clears not the memory but clears the classes.
This means that classes are to be reloaded.

This seems to me a feature to ensure that if a java class changes while octave is running, this change is taken into account when the class is used again.

Contrary to understanding this is #37971,
clear java fails if there are still objects in use.
