I don't use Chrome but a superficial search returns many reports that it is indeed a memory hog.

On the other hand, the documents discussing the issue usually suggest solutions to alleviate the problem. You may want to look at some of them and see if you can make Chrome use less resources without affecting the way you use it.

Interestingly, I've just spend a week without internet access, so was forced to play GNUbg :-) Not a single problem! Normally I have Google Chrome running and I guess there's some sort of resource problem, leading to the interminable 'Not Responding' problem.

Thanks again for your further suggestions. Today I've tried both 1.4 and 1.3, unfortunately exactly the same result. 1.4 stopped responding after a couple of moves, 1.3 before I could compete a game. Both times I had to close the program.

I know I'm repeating myself but what seems strange is just how persistenly the problem is with GNUbg and how occassional it is with other programs.

Something you may try is installing earlier versions (1.04 or 1.03, available at http://www.gnubg.org/) and see it they are more reliable.

In another direction, using this tool: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/dd996900 might give some clue on the problem. This is just an idea from reading its description. I have never used it nor done any debugging on Windows machines.

Many thanks for your suggestions. I haven't changed any of the default settings - the Cache is set to 7Mb ('small') and the no of Eval to 1.

What is strange is that if another program stops responding, e.g. Word - this only happens occasionsally - it always restarts, whereas GNUBgm stops responding 99% of the time and never restarts, so I'm forced to close it.

A possible cause (for gnubg) could be if you have set the cache size (Settings / Options / Other / Cache:) to a value that is too high for your computer memory.

A value of a few 10s of MB should be fine and not strain any remotely recent computer. More is useful only for (long) rollouts and the gain in not huge. Don't set this cache size to 0 on the other hand, that would slow gnubg noticeably.

Another possibility would be to have set the number of Eval threads (in the same settings panel as above) to a too high value. 1 is safe, 2 should be fine on all but very old (10 years or so) machines, whether higher values could cause problems or not depends on your computer although anything above 8 on a consumer-grade desktop or laptop would be suspect.

Of course, if the "other programs" who have the same problems do even when gnubg is not started, it is likely the cause is in your Windows installation or possibly in your hardware.

I suspect this may be a problem with my PC but I didn't know where to ask for help. I find that GNU Bkg persistently ''Does Not Respond'' and I have to close it. I have occassional problem with other programs but GNU is so persistent it's almost unusable. Any advice?
