I don't get this behaviour - analyse->rollout gives me the requested number of trials. It is treated like the Hint Window though, so results are not saved.

A somewhat grotty way of rolling out the initial position:
Start a match. If you get the opening roll, make any legal move and let gnubg play, if gnubg wins, let it make its move.

Then press edit and restore the chequers to the starting position. Analyse->rollout now does what you want, with the caveat noted above, that there's now move record to store the result of the rollout in, so you can't extend them.

But - I just found the way to deal with that. Press hint, which will bring up a cube decision window. Do a rollout as initial position there and you will have a copy button and the ability to extend the rollout as long as you keep the window open.
