I did read README.cvs, and I see now autoreconf -i does copy in all those missing files, i didnt get them before.

I may not have done "autoreconf -i -s" first, i may have done "automake -a -f" and "autoconf -if", i cant reproduce it now.

In README.CVS it says
Automake 1.7.3 (or better),
It should say 1.7.6 (or better)

But yea, it was my mistake, sorry.

I think you are not properly following the directions for building the CVS version. Please examine the README.cvs file and follow those directions. When I do this from a fresh checkout on my system it works fine. Well, right now it's broken during the "update" step because the FSF haven't replaced some critical files on their server. But, if you copy those in all is well.

The files you mention here and in your other bug report are not supposed to be provided with GNU make. They are parts of other packages, like autoconf, and will get installed when you run the autoreconf step as described in README.cvs

If you still can't get it working I need to know what version of autoconf, automake, and gettext you're using.

Trying to build from CVS.

configure.in tries to genereate po/Makefile.in, but po/Makefile.in.in doesnt exist so configure doesnt complete.

Makefile.am also fails as it tries to run a make in the po/ directory and there isnt a Makefile.

I remove reference to the po dir in Makefile.am and configure.in and it seems to be working now.
