Okay. I suppose bug closed then. Sorry for the inconvenience.

When you do ^R, you should do M-F before doing ^T, because otherwise you insert the file into a nameless buffer. When you do the M-F (switching on a new buffer, that will take the name of the read-in file), then you do get the unwritable message.

Also, you are using an "old" nano. The nano in git has a different message when a file is unwritable.

Rewriting corrected steps -

touch now.txt && chmod a-w now.txt && src/nano

When nano launches type ^R^T^W now.txt <Enter> <Enter>.

To reproduce the bug, do following in git repository -

touch now && chmod a-w now.txt && src/nano

When nano launches type ^R^T^W now <Enter> <Enter>.

Message saying "File is unwritable" should have appeared, just like when we launch nano from command-line it says "Read 0 lines (Warning: No write permission)".

A message saying "Error writing now.txt: Permission denied" does appear but after you edit the file and go for saving it.
