and, for what it's worth, if I print the figure one more time its geometry does not change anymore.

I still see this behavior in my dev version, built June 7.

This has been fixed on the development branch. I don't know which changeset, or more likely multiple changesets, resulted in the fix. Since it is not clear, it won't be backported to stable.
