Solved it. Was unrelated to Octave. Installation directory is mapped / mounted on NFS and occasionally falls off after a period of no access. Sorry for noise.

Thanks for filing a bug report. I don't see how this could be a bug with Octave, but please do provide more information to show that it is.

What does "make" report as the installation prefix? For example,

After running "make install" is octave in the PREFIX/bin directory? If you have the right permissions to install files in that directory it should be there.

New to Octave. Built Octave on Debian Wheezy AMD64. Dev version is 38c0c1f5cf57. No errors on "make" or "make install" but Octave disappears. No change with ldconfig.
