I know, I'm using evince as a PDF viewer also and I see no such errors. Since it doesn't seem to be affecting the rendering of the PDF, and my newer version of evince doesn't show any errors (and moreover graphical programs are notorious for throwing all kinds of errors to stderr without any indication of whether they are important or not), I'm closing this as working.

Please do report any other bugs you find in building or using Octave.

evince is used as a pdf viewer, not involved in the building process. The errors are output on stdout or stderr of evince, and visible in the terminal where evince was launched.

The octave.pdf displays fine. Looking up the corresponding sections, I find no issues in for instance the links in the index to those sections.

Certainly a low priority issue. It just caught my attention as this is different behavior from 4.0.1-rc4. This is on RHEL.
I'll keep monitoring this and report findings.

Thanks for the bug report. The pdf works fine for me with a recently built development version. Are there any errors in the PDF viewer other than these messages? Are the corresponding sections visible?

Can you please try building again from a clean directory and verify that the error is reproducible? If so, which OS and which version of evince are you building Octave with?

opening octave.pdf from a dev version (octave.pdf 4.0.1 rc4 does not report this errors) with evince gives two messages:
