Using the GUI to select cases uses FILTER BY, which required that a 0/1 filter variable has been created.

I don't see an easy way to create this filter variable in the GUI.

Novice users (who are more likely to use PSPPIRE) can use variables which don't conform to this requirement and it seems to them as if the selection of cases did not occur or occurred incorrectly.

Even worse, users can enter syntax in the "Use filter variable" field that creates a syntax error. For example, after pulling variable X into this field, I added " > 9" to the field, which generated "FILTER BY X > 9." which is invalid syntax and generates an error (and the error is cryptic, like so many are, advising the users that "Syntax error at '>': expecting end of command.
