This looks like problem which should be fixed in 4.4.0 release.
I'm closing it, please reopen if it's still reproducible.

The current MacPorts build of screen aborts on launch on a PowerPC G4 Mac Mini running OS X Server 10.5.8.  Here is a transcript showing version information, the abort, and a backtrack from running under GDB.
