Plots leading to a crash has been reported by many Windows users. It's possible this has been fixed in the default branch (see e.g. bug #44459), and the OP has found a workaround, so closing as a duplicate.

I found a solution that works at
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12032494/plot-window-not-responding

in the Octave command line type in: graphics_toolkit,
then then switch the default toolkit to gnuplot:

graphics_toolkit('gnuplot')

This stopped crashing of the program

I had installed Octave 4.0.0, it was working perfectly until I had to remove KB3072630 Windows update in order to install Solid Works.

After this change the GUI crashes when trying to call for a "figure" or "plot" in either GUI or CLI mode.

I tried to remove the qt-settings and re-install the program as well, none of the previous solved the problem.

Thanks
