The GUI interface is an interactive mode. A non interactive mode would be when you call Octave only with a script or a command to eval.

If what you're looking for is to not start the gui, you want --no-gui

Starting with 4.0.0 the "-i" switch is not working.
Even if I start Octave with "-i" it opens a GUI interface.
