Closing after no follow up to explain the strange behavior.

Ah yes, I'm using readline 6.2. I'll bow out of the rest of the discussion.

It was added in readline 6.3. Setting the variable shows me

when in standard emacs input mode. If I change to vi mode, the one-character prefix is either ":" or "+".

This works for me as well and I use vi input mode with a complicated .inputrc file. On the other hand, I don't get any indication that show-mode-in-prompt is working. What version of readline library are you using?

I haven't used this setting yet, but I just added it and didn't see anything unusual. Are you using emacs or vi input mode? Is this command-line or in the GUI?

I see the mode character show up to the left of the prompt, but all of my arrow keys and other key bindings seem to work as normal.

When setting

set show-mode-in-prompt on

in my ~/.inputrc and being in editing mode, the Octave command line behaves strangely when using the arrow up and down keys. On the first press it does nothing then on the second it changes to the next command in the buffer and then it switches to the command mode.

A workaround is to use

$if octave
set show-mode-in-prompt off
$else
set show-mode-in-prompt on
$endif

in the ~/.inputrc file.
