don't define unicode characters in documents based on the texinfo.tex version (surely unmaintainable), but simply on whether they are defined or not (\csname uni:xxxx\endcsname being defined).

For that matter, it would be trivial for texinfo.tex to provide a command like \ProvideUnicodeCharacter, for documents to use, which would only define the char if not defined. Except it won't be defined except in new texinfo.tex, so it won't help you unless you distribute it, so back to square one.

By the way, I doubt merely using Unicode math characters will result in coherently readable math in HTML (unless the math is really simple). Texinfo has never had support for any of the attempts (many have come and gone ...) to get math in HTML.

Good luck,
k

Thanks for the summary.

This will work until more of the definitions are added to texinfo.tex, then the extra definitions (\pi etc.) will break.

There have been some great hints on the mailing list about possible solutions, which I would like to summarize:

1. Redistribute the texinfo.tex version with my manual. Then the export to PDF will always use that particular macro definitions, which will work on different systems.

2. Use more conditional code and math mode in TeX, but Unicode formulars in other formats. This will get rid of the math related Unicode declarations for TeX.

3. Conditionally declare unicode characters based on the detected TexInfo (kludge alert).

I have a manual for a free software package, which is written in utf-8 encoding. Export to text/info/html works as expected, but I have to add the following to be able to export it to pdf:

This has worked for me for a while, but it breaks on later Texinfo versions with the following error:

As far as I have found out, there have been the following relevant changes to TexInfo in the meantime: (1) The character 00A0 has been declared globally, which is great, and (2) commit 6086 has introduced error checking, which forbids re-declarations for the same character.

Now I have the problem that I have to remove the DeclareUnicodeCharacter commands, to be able to compile under recent TexInfo versions, but then it is no longer possible to compile under old TexInfo versions (for example in Debian Jessie).

Could you remove the above error message, or at least make it a warning message? Then my TexInfo document would be backwards compatible.
