In my Linux PC (Linux Mint 18.1 Mate 64 bit + Octave 4.3.0+), same problem appears on both of no-gui and gui mode. Typing "CTL+C" cause hangup (hangup message is the tail of this comment). But, In my case I could avoid this problem by typing "unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS" before starting up Octave.
( Sorry , Cause I don't know about the relationship between that environment variable and Octave, It may cause other problem.)

Hi Mike. Thanks for your reply. I tried without openblas but got everything broken and so decided to apt-get install -f, apt-get autoremove and then recompile. After doing this, the issue is not reproducible for me! Looks like I had the remnants of octave 3.8.1 from the Ubuntu distro lying around... it's all very confusing for a simple farm boy ;)

Unable to reproduce here. I hold down Ctrl+C and it scrolls as long as I like, both command line and GUI.

Might the OpenBLAS warning message you see have something to do with timing that causes your Ctrl+C to come too fast for Octave to handle? Can you try without OpenBLAS and see if the crash follows it?

If you lanuch octave, click in the command window and hold down CTRL C, then after about 5 seconds it crashes.

It may seem a perverse thing to do, but often when you want to interrupt a running program you press CTRL C - perhaps a bunch of times depending on the mood of the user ;) Octave isn't typically very stable w.r.t. this action.

With the GUI, everything just disappears. On the command line you get some output:

$ octave --no-gui --quiet
OpenBLAS : Your OS does not support AVX instructions. OpenBLAS is using Nehalem kernels as a fallback, which may give poorer performance.
