Well, hardly anyone will ever search for a bare anchor; if they use an anchor, it will be with one or more characters; and they will most likely not go searching for this string when it actually is just one position ahead. So finding the anchored search string at a place that is not the start of a word is very, very unlikely.

Also, searching for the bare anchor \< is equivalent to doing Ctrl-Right or Ctrl-Left. Why go to the trouble of doing a regex search when a single key stroke will do?

So, the severity of this bug is minor.

Doing a regex search for \< will match each alphnumeric character in a document. It will skip over whitespace and other characters, but will find each individual letter and digit, instead of just the first one in each sequence. On the other hand, \> will correctly match only the end of each alphanumeric sequence.

The bug is most likely caused by the searching code not considering the whole current line, but acting as if the line starts at the current cursor position. This will probably be hard to fix.
