I agree that zlib should be listed as a required dependency on the webpage.

OTOH in order to compile you had to provide the zlib headers (otherwise it would have failed). That implied zlib was a runtime dependency too.

What you face here is a compilation/installation/packaging issue and not a coding one. External routines must be there otherwise the program can't do its job, period. Complaining politely or crashing won't make much difference for the job to be done.

I'm not saying that handling dependencies in linux distros is trivial, all the contrary. On the website there is a static linux version of texmacs available for download for those who do not want or do not know how to take care of these details.

I made them myself, or rather I updated the specifications from 1.0.x to 1.99 (see https://github.com/Profpatsch/nixpkgs/commit/f3c1ad6baf23053f94dc9884a49c20703f7a38c9)

I used http://www.texmacs.org/tmweb/download/sources.en.html as source for the dependencies needed, so the page should probably list zlib for future packagers.

Tough, I would see it as a bug that the program crashes if dlopen can’t find the right .so on runtime; since it’s quite a static dependency.

Yes, zlib is a dependency of texmacs. Who made the executable you use?

texmacs crashes if dlopen() can’t find libz.so.1 on start.

For NixOS I had to patch the ELF headers of texmacs.bin to point to a valid path. And of course make it a dependency.
