Seems sensible to go with system settings.

I changed to Gnome icons which brightened it up a lot. For some reason, it was on something weird somber setting... no idea how/why/who/etc. Well... we know "who" ;)

My preference is to stay with the desktop icon set, at least for now. Even with a slight change in icon look-and-feel, it takes a moment to get used to an appearance different from the default. Note also that icons have tool-tips for quick reference... The extraneous space of the editor layout should be addressed, though, in another wish/bug report.

Octave conforms to the freedesktop.org icon standard, which means that all icons have generic "well-known" names as well as fallback image files. The icon used for the "Save File and Run" button is labeled "system-run". Octave provides an icon file for "system-run" that looks like this: http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/raw-file/421e3ebfca8d/libgui/src/icons/system-run.png

If you're seeing the three grey gears, that icon image is provided by your desktop environment theme. In my case it's GNOME and I see the gears image because that it's GNOME's preferred view of the icon called "system-run". If you choose a different desktop environment and/or a different theme, you may see something different.

We could ditch the "system-run" icon name and choose our own icon all the time, but I'd be more in favor of keeping with the standard icon names so if users do prefer different themes, the icons all change with the theme as intended. Does that make sense?

Woah woah.... I see it now, the three gears thing is exactly it! I never paid attention to it until now. Actually it kind of looks grayed out and unavailable. Can we make it green? :)

So to clarify, are you requesting that the "Save File and Run" icon be changed from a picture of gears to a green arrow for Matlab compatibility?

Can you open a separate report for each separate issue? It makes it more complicated to track what's been fixed and what hasn't and so on with more than one issue per report.

Good point about the space of the editor menus. There is "Editor" in the window title bar, so having "Editor" as the first line within the window is somewhat redundant. Also, it seems as though the toolbars/menus should have a collapsible mechanism on the left side.

The editor has a shortcut icon for Save File and Run in the form of three small gears. (That icon may be what is assigned by the system default icon set.) Is that what you are looking for?

I know there's the menu "Run -> Save File and Run" but I've got used to Matlab's green arrow on the Editor that does the same thing in a single button press. It's kind of handy.

One other request - can you reduce the whitespace in the editor when in undocked mode? The window title is Editor then there is a line below saying Editor and there is extra (vertical) space around the icons. Thanks.
