Thank you.
It built now successfully with the commands:

setenv CPPFLAGS -D_GLIBCXX_USE_CXX11_ABI=0
pkg install image-2.4.0.tar.gz

The undefined symbol is using the new C++11 ABI. You probably have a gcc that compiles to the new ABI by default but your system's libstdc++ is built using the old ABI.

This is not a bug of the image package but a transition with the compiler toolchain and the system libraries.

See https://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/Cxx11AbiCompatibility and https://developerblog.redhat.com/2015/02/05/gcc5-and-the-c11-abi/ for more information, try compiling with the -D_GLIBCXX_USE_CXX11_ABI=0 option added to CPPFLAGS or CXXFLAGS.

the "imreconstruct.cc" compiles all right with g++ 5.1 with the patch "workaround_gcc_65843.cset"
Before installing with
pkg install image-2.4.0.tar.gz
defining the "HAVE_GCC_BUG_658433" with "setenv"

It still fails to build:

.../octave/image-2.4.0/i686-pc-linux-gnu-api-v50+/bwconncomp.oct: failed to load: .../octave/image-2.4.0/i686-pc-linux-gnu-api-v50+/bwconncomp.oct: undefined symbol: _ZNK5ArrayINSt7__cxx1112basic_stringIcSt11char_traitsIcESaIcEEEE17resize_fill_valueEv
error: called from 'which' in file /usr/.../octave-4.0.0/share/octave/4.0.0/m/help/which.m near line 31,

Also octave complains:
load_path: .../image-2.4.0/i686-pc-linux-gnu-api-v50+: No such file or directory
and there is no folder "i686-pc-linux-gnu-api-v50+" under "image-2.4.0/" or anywhere in the computer-system
