I noticed that the new mesa libs produce a different
dump from before:
++vebatim++

>> print zzz.pdf

panic: Segmentation fault -- stopping myself...
attempting to save variables to 'octave-workspace'...
save to 'octave-workspace' complete
Error: /syntaxerror in -file-
Operand stack:
STnoshfill
Execution stack:
%interp_exit .runexec2 --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- 2 %stopped_push --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- false 1 %stopped_push 1951 1 3 %oparray_pop 1950 1 3 %oparray_pop --nostringval-- 1934 1 3 %oparray_pop 1820 1 3 %oparray_pop --nostringval-- %errorexec_pop .runexec2 --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- 2 %stopped_push
Dictionary stack:
-Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Current allocation mode is local
Last OS error: Not a directory
GPL Ghostscript 9.16: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1
_verbatim_
Notice the STnoshfill at the top of the dump.
This is a symbol defined in Binary file /usr/lib64/./libgl2ps.so.1.3.8
This suggests that it is a call to gl2ps that causes the seg fault.

This is not all that helpful, but it may suggest something to whoever
knows how gl2ps is used in the print process.

Tell me if a full bt would be helpful.

The mesa... files were just updated on Fedora 22, but
the seg fault is still present for Intel HD6000 hardware...
I assume that the bug report to them is still outstanding.

This definitely not an Octave bug. Maybe it would
be best to re-title it to include Intel HD 6000 so
that others are less likely to duplicate it.

And, anyhow, close it.

I just checked and the Intel HD 5000 graphics works
just fine. And, the assert that causes the crash was only
added very recently, so on the HD 6000 the appearance of
it working seems to have included some serious buffer
mismanagement.

Do you want to close the report since there is little Octave can do? Do you want to re-title to mention HD6000 drivers and Mesa versions involved?

This does appear to be specific to my HD 6000 graphics.
print works correctly on FC22 system with mesa 10.5.4-1
but other graphics hardware (radeon).

So, this does not deserve much concern with respect to
Octave and the drivers for HD 6000 are obviously still
unstable, so best to be patient.

Use of print with a visible plot always crashes.

The system messages is:
vbo/vbo_exec_draw.c:278: vbo_exec_vtx_unmap: Assertion `exec->vtx.buffer_ptr != ((void *)0)' failed.

This appears to have started with mesa 10.5.4-1 and
still happens with mesa 10.5.7

If figure(1, "visible", "off");
is used the output is generated orrectly.

Of course, this may be specific to the drivers for Intel HD 6000
graphics which seem to be fairly unstable.
