OK you're right, this is intended behavior, or rather, the intended default.
I'd say it is unexpected, but I just checked with Matlab r2015b prerelease and that does the very same thing here.

Matlab even "clips" the text only if it is completely outside the plot box, just like Octave does. Also unexpected (for me; I'd expect the text to be clipped progressively when it gets more and more outside the plot box), but Octave should follow Matlab here as well, shouldn't it.

Thanks for the explanation!

Closing as "invalid", fixing the bug title

Hi,

Are you referring to text objects or annotation objects? While the latter is not supposed to be influenced by zooming, the former is.
I am under the impression that the figure you attached is annotated with text objects, which have their "clipping" property "off" by default (as in matlab). Setting this property "on" will do what you want. Am I overlooking your problem?

Now about "axis tight", AFAIR running this command will set axes set "x(y/z)lim" as tight as possible and "x(y/z)limmode" to manual (as in Matlab). Manually changing limits (by zooming) won't trigger any further automatic magic (this is what manual means).

Same issue on Linux.

It isn't even needed to zoom; just panning labels outside the plot box will do - the labels remain visible, the plot is clipped.

(provisionally OS set to Windows, haven't yet checked Linux)

After zooming in on an otherwise fine plot it turns out that annotations extend beyond the "plot box".
In the attached figure (a geological cross-section with boreholes) the plots themselves (colored vertical lines = layering) are clipped at the plot box borders, while the labels corresponding to clipped boreholes are drawn outside the box limits.
In this case they extend beyond horizontal limits but vertical plot box limits are also ignored.

This happens with Qt and fltk toolkits.

Expected: labels to be clipped at plot box limits as well.

In addition, while I have set "axis tight" on these plots, it turns out that after zooming in horizontally the left and right plot borders aren't exactly "tight" to the plot window limits. But I do not know if "axis tight" is to be preserved when zooming in (?) - As a user I'd expect so but maybe this works as intended?
