I will close this report as duplicate of bug #44765 (legend background issue) and bug #31596 (printing non ascii characters).

Oh, workaround. Not sure. I believe the legend background is being filled but is being printed first, behind the plot. (Change the legend color to [0.99 0.99 0.99] if not. You could try saving as an EPS file and manually changing the order of drawing--you need to be a little knowledgeable about PostScript for that. Another possibility is to save as SVG and edit in a program called "inkscape". In inkscape, you might have to ungroup objects, but don't ungroup to the point that the legend elements are ungrouped. Try keeping the legend elements as all one group and just move the group to the front of the view.

Also, you could try

graphics_toolkit("gnuplot");
figure();
<do plot>
print(<file name>,"-depsc");

or something similar.

This is a known bug. Some attempts were made to fix this, but it seems the fix was causing several problems on some Windows machines, so the patch was held from version 4.0.

Hi,

Im using GNU Octave (GUI) under Windows 8, and when I save a figure (as PNG or PDF) the legend's background is transparent (can't set it to white) and the Greek symbols don't display correctly.

Please check the images attached.

Is there any workaround for this?
