I refer to the mail from Harry

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/pspp-users/2015-06/msg00043.html

So the plan is that the problem reported by Robert Gross is closed, because it is not reproducible. The problem reported by Alan is a different one. This bug report from now on refers to the problem reported by Alan.

The original problem from Robert Gross:

=============
PSPP crashes about every second or third time I try to save a file during manual data entry. What might be causing this?
============

The behavior described from Alan does not result in a crash and it is not related to saving the file.

I can see the behavior described by Alan on debian and osx and I think it is related to the fact the default content of an empty cell is a dot. When selecting the cell, the cell content is selected. When you then type something new the old content is overwritten. But moving the cursor or any action that deselects the content will end up keeping the dot. I the cell content is numeric, then this will result in an error message.

This was reported by Robert Gross:

Thank you for getting back to me Fredrich. The version is 0.8.4-g267362. The event is that Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, says “PSPPIRE (PSPP+GUI) has stopped working. The selections are to check online for a solution and close the program OR Close the program.

I appreciate your patience with me.

Reported by Alan Mead but also present in the current GTK3 version

1. Create a new data window (File > New > Data; creates a new data
window with one cell)
2. Click into the cell, enter 1<enter> (this creates a second column and
second row, which works fine)
3. Press 2<enter>3<enter> (this creates three cases for the first
variable and works fine)
3. Click into column 2 and press 1<Enter>2<Enter>3<Enter>

There should be a second variable with also three data values but the
second case the 2 does not over-write the existing period and I get a
warning in the output window "warning: Data not valid as format F:
Number followed by garbage" and the cell value is not changed from "."
