I modified the patch, now it can handle multiple lines, and the behaviour of backspace is also corrected.

Thanks for your feedback, Lachlan!
I'll look into handling multi-line commands. (I kind of hoped that would be rendered moot by my work on bug #41842, but thats probably going to take a while)

Thanks for the patch, Stefan.

The first part moving the cursor works well provided the command doesn't span multiple lines.

The second part replaced the wrong characters. The attached patch seems to get it right (it uses Backspace instead of Delete, and moves the cursor to the end of the selection first).

It still fails if the command spans multiple lines, and if the key that triggered the event was also backspace then it should only delete the selected text, but it also deletes the one before.

Do you still have some time to work on this patch? (I can't guarantee anyone apply it even if we finish it, but let's try.)

Confirmed.

Do you work in the Octave GUI, or with the CLI (just a terminal)?

FYI, Windows' cmd32 terminal and Powershell have the same behavior. You do type your Octave commands in a terminal after all, so in a way Octave's behavior isn't unexpected.
And, Matlab r2014b behaves identically (which IMO is not to be interpreted as an endorsement to copy & retain ML behavior everywhere).

But I agree the behavior you desire (like e.g., the GUI editor does) would be nice for the current line in the terminal (or terminal pane) as well.

At the moment when you type in the command line, you can select text with your mouse (and copy/paste it just as expected), but when you want to overwrite the selected text, you'll just write where the cursor originally was. Also you cannot change the cursor position by clicking with the mouse. So the 'mouse selection' only works for reading, if you want to overwrite/delete text, you have to use the arrowkeys.

It would be great if you could use the cursor too, like you are used to from everywhere else.

This was only tested on Windows 7 (Octave 3.8.2 i686-w64-mingw32), so perhaps it works on other systems.
