In your home directory, do this: mkdir foo && cd foo && nano '~/bar'. (The single quotes are needed to prevent the shell from expanding the tilde.) Nano says on the statusbar: "[ Error writing lock file: Directory '~' doesn't exist ]"

Then type xx, save and exit. (Notice how upon saving the titlebar changed from mentioning ~/bar to /home/name/bar.) Now open bar again with the same command: nano '~/bar'. This time it says nothing about a lock file any more. However, the lock file is nowhere to be found, it apparently isn't being written. Maybe the message about the lock is being overwitten by the "Read 1 line" message? If so, this shouldn't happen.
