Recent - and old stabl build as well - versions of lw6 do fail on startup on GNU/Linux with some intel video cards. I suspect this is due to some weird program/driver cooupling. Possible solution: use matrix code to replace the pick stuff. after all this is just about getting the position of simple cylinders.
